Music of a Different Kind
Song 4 on album After Six Days
"Music of a Different Kind" - Ps. 98:1-3 says to sing a new song to the Lord about His salvation, and that He has remembered His love. The gospel and Jesus' ministry are that new song. He came and is transforming everything.
I wrote “Music of a Different Kind” while reading Mark. I was thinking about all the songs I want to sing and music I'd like to make to the Lord, and wishing I had more resources, more capacity, and more abilities to do justice to all the songs I wanted to sing to the Lord. I was feeling frustration that day in particular (27 June 2005) and I wrote in my journal “Lord, I want to make music, I would love to make beautiful music” and I felt the Lord say “you are making music of a different kind”. And I think about all the other things in my life - besides music - family, children, friends and people we were called to serve and all the lives I've had the privilege of being part of, and that not being able to make music like I wanted to was in part a consequence of spending the resources I did have on these other things. And I feel like He was saying “you are making music of a different kind” - that these things are my music, my new song to Him. Salvation. Love. all the ends of the earth. All of this I understood in a moment. I didn't write any of that down, just “you are making music of a different kind” and the next words I wrote were “touch the sick, heal the blind…” (the first lines in this song) and it wasn't about me at all. It was about Him. He is the one making music of a different kind. I was reminded of Ps. 98:1-3 which says to sing a new song to the Lord about His salvation and that He has remembered His love. Because He came, there is a different, new song, a new kind of “music” that is here and transforming everything, and if we have the eyes to see and ears to hear, we sing it, too, but only because He is already singing it.
*trivia: earlier in the same day I wrote a song called “This Well”. I have not recorded it yet.
Music of a Different Kind Lyrics.
Touch the sick, heal the blind
You are making music of a different kind.
Touch the man everyone says is out of his mind
You are making music of a different kind.
Reaching for the one others just pass by
You are making music of a different kind.
Touch each one, look deep in their haunted eyes
You are making music of a different kind.
Bring a boy back to his mother's side
You are making music of a different kind.
Lift up the girl everyone said had died
You are making music of a different kind
Heal the deaf and mute man with a weary sigh
You are making music of a different kind
Love each one, touch each desperate life
You are making music of a different kind.
You are making music of a different kind…
And it swells and rises to the heavens
beautiful noise only heavenly eyes can see
Hear the pianos crash, feel the orchestra thunder
Then it whispers, and brings us to our knees.
Laying down Your life, Your life for mine
You are making music of a different kind
Taking up my sorrows, Lord, You taste each tear I've cried
You are making music of a different kind
Break the bread 'til everyone is satisfied
You are making music of a different kind
Pour out Your blood 'til it flows like wine
You are making music of a different kind
You are making music of a different kind…
And it swells and rises to the heavens
Beautiful noise only heavenly eyes can see
Hear the pianos crach, feel the orchestra thunder
Then it whispers, and brings us to our knees…
You are making music of a different kind…
